Design Note: CFD-Analysis

When covering the range from Formula fins (18-28knt) to asymmetrical speed fins (45-50knt), it is quite obvious that there is the need for development of special profiles performing best in the required operating points. This development is based on analyzing the fins fluid dynamics before producing the molds to avoid useless or weak designs and scrap. This is done at the computer with a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software tools.

In the last 7 years we created a large database of our own developed profiles covering the requirements of the fin types offered. But for each new fin model we are optimizing the profiles and the profile distribution including the “real world” test feedback of the predecessor models. Especially the fine tuning of the leading edge design allows significant performance enhancements by higher lift2drag ratios and better stalling characteristics.

The data output of the CFD software is an application optimized profile that is needed in our fin design software for other calculations.
